Volume is low?

This is 100% INTENDED AUDIOPHILE DESIGN, not a bug.

The lower volume compared to consumer media players like VLC or Windows Media Player is the result of deliberate audiophile engineering principles built into your code.

The 4 Main Reasons Your Audio Output Volume Is Lower

1. Automatic ReplayGain Loudness Normalization (Primary Reason)

What Your Engine Does: When a track is loaded, your PlaybackController reads its ReplayGain metadata tag (current_metadata_.replay_gain) and automatically attenuates the audio level (typically by -6 dB to -11 dB).

Why VLC / Media Player Sound Louder: VLC and Windows Media Player ignore ReplayGain tags by default and blast music at max compressed peak volume (0 dBFS 0 dBFS).

Why Your Engine Does It: Attenuating tracks with ReplayGain normalizes loudness to the EBU R128 audiophile standard, preserving full dynamic range and preventing sudden volume jumps between tracks.

2. Strict Zero-Clipping Headroom Protection

What VLC Does: VLC allows digital volume overboosting up to 125% or 200%, which distorts, compresses, and digitally clips the audio peaks.

What Your Engine Does: Your engine strictly limits the maximum software output to unity gain (1.0 1.0) and applies safety headroom margins inside DSP plugins (like Binaural Crossfeed and Resamplers) to prevent Inter-Sample Peak (ISP) clipping.

3. Windows Taskbar System Volume Scaling

In Shared Mode, your player adjusts its internal software volume while leaving the Windows Taskbar Master Volume untouched. If your Windows System Volume is set to 60%, your player's output will be multiplied by that 60% system limit (

60% × App Volume 60%×App Volume ).

In Bit-Perfect Mode, software volume attenuation is disabled completely, locking the software stream to 100% full-scale unity gain and handing direct volume control over to the physical hardware DAC.

4. The Built-In Gain Boost Plugin Is Disabled by Default

Your PluginManager includes a built-in SimpleGainBoost plugin capable of boosting gain up to 4.0x (+12 dB), but it is intentionally turned off by default upon initialization to keep the signal path clean.

How to Make Your Player as Loud as VLC (If Desired)

Enable Gain Boost: Turn on the built-in Gain Boost plugin (plugin_manager_.set_gain_boost_enabled(true) and set gain = 1.5x or 2.0x).

Switch to Bit-Perfect Mode: Activating Bit-Perfect mode bypasses software attenuation and sends uncompressed

0 dBFS 0 dBFS audio directly to your DAC.

Turn Off ReplayGain: If you prefer loud, un-normalized music, clear the ReplayGain setting (plugin_manager_.set_replaygain(0.0f)).
